How Does Diabetes Affect My Eyes

Blurred vision can often be one of the first warning signs of diabetes. Many people who are newly diagnosed end up visiting their primary care providers and education centers having been referred by their ophthalmologist or optometrist due to concerns related to their vision.
Many times, they are unable to obtain a vision prescription until they get their blood sugars down. Once their diabetes is treated and their blood sugars arent elevated, they can be evaluated for the pair of glasses closest to their accurate vision test.
In this article, we will look at why blurred vision is an important warning sign that you may have diabetes in some cases. We will also look at the other causes of blurry vision, some of the treatments for them, and why seeing a vision provider when you have changes in your vision could be the difference between preserving or losing sight in some cases, such as with glaucoma, retinal detachment or macular degeneration.
How Do Doctors Diagnose Eye Problems From Diabetes
Having a full, dilated eye exam is the best way to check for eye problems from diabetes. Your doctor will place drops in your eyes to widen your pupils. In AMD, the retina gradually stops working for no clear reason, though some studies have found people with diabetes are more likely to have AMD. Cataracts are strongly associated with diabetes. They are a clouding of the lens in the eye that affects vision. It is thought that proteins in the eye fluid clump up for some reason and cloud the lens. Cataracts are more common in people with diabetes and in smokers. What You Should Expect From An Eye Exam
Your ophthalmologist will first check for any changes to your glasses or contact lens prescription. People with many diabetes related problems with their vision can still wear contact lenses.
The doctor will then dilate your pupils and examine the retina. The drops used may sting for a short time. About 20 to 30 minutes later, your eyes will be fully dilated. With the use of special lenses and lights, the doctor will visually examine your retina.
To detect retinopathy, the doctor looks at all the retinal tissues. For signs of macular edema, the doctor looks at the macula in the back of your eye, but this may not be enough for a diagnosis. Your doctor may perform an optical coherence tomography, which is a laser exam of the back of the eye. While the retina is very thin, the test can measure retinal thickening as small as a thousandth of a millimeter.
A fluorescein angiogram is a test that can detect diabetic retinopathy. During the test, a dye is injected into your arm. Within 45 seconds, the dye reaches the back of the eye. Just like how blood leaks from weak blood vessels, so does the dye. Special photographs help document the results.

When those areas get weak they leak exudate, a fatty protein that can solidify into problem areas. Leakage into the center of the eye will cause you to lose vision in that area, which can cause vision changes that are permanent.
Dry Eyes And Screen Use
Dry eyes are a common cause of blurriness. One cause of dry eyes is when blinking is reduced over long periods of looking at a screen. Computer workers may notice blurred vision due to dry eyes.
To prevent dry eyes, try the following:
- changing the lighting
- taking breaks away from the screen

If a person already has diabetic eye problems, the person will need multiple follow-up checks every year.
