There are rumors circulating around the internet that baking soda and when mixed with equal parts powdered sugar, will effectively kill ants.
Ants take this homemade poison back to their nest and infect the rest of the colony and the queen. When ingested, baking soda produces bubbles of carbon dioxide, which explode the infected ant from the inside out.
Here’s what we know: no scientific evidence has proven this theory. Unfortunately, there’s no reputable source to back up these claims so I don’t know for sure. A better homemade solution is to use borax with sugar.

Borax is not a quick fix that gets rid of ants immediately, but because of its slower workings, it is a more effective and long term home remedy. Borax works by gradually killing the ants after they ingest it, and because most ants bring back the fruits of their labour to their colony to feed their larvae and their queen, this method of using borax will kill the ants and destroy the colony from the inside out.
How To Identify Types Of Ants
There are many species of ants across the United States. And, when deciding which method to use to eliminate them, it helps to know what kind of ant you’re dealing with.
According to Nalyanya, the most common ants that will enter your home include carpenter ants, odorous house ants, and pavement ants. You may also see big headed ants, and on the western side of the country, something called crazy ants.
- Carpenter ants: A large species of ant that feeds and nests in damp wood with elbowed antennae and a pinched waist. Size ranges from 3.4 to 13 millimeters.
- Odorous house ants: Dark brown in color with an unevenly shaped thorax and a petiole hidden by their abdomen. Odorous house ants emit a very strong scent when crushed.
- Pavement ants: Worker pavement ants are small in size and are typically dark brown or black with a shiny shell.
- Big headed ants: Big headed ants are one of the easiest ants to identify their heads are about three times the size of the rest of their body and they are much more aggressive than typical house ants.
- Crazy ants: The tawny crazy ant or Raspberry crazy ant moves in a quick and unpredictable manner. These ants are about 3 millimeters in size and are covered in reddish-brown hairs. They are often found in or near electronics.

What Is The Difference Between Borax And Boric Acid
Borax and boric acid are two different chemical compounds that both contain the same chemical element, boron. Borax is a sodium borate mineral compound and is found as a solid white powder. It is also known as a decahydrate, meaning that it has 10 water molecules attached to it.

So while you may be able to use borax to treat a satellite colony, you may not actually resolve your pest problem because the ants likely aren’t carrying the borax to the main colony, which may be yards away outside. A trained professional, however, will be able to look for and treat these satellite colonies, as well as the main colony, offering a more reliable solution.
How Does Borax Kill Ants

Testing Borax Ant Bait Using Sugar And Borax Dry
First on my list was a mixture of confectioners sugar and Borax in dry form. I just mixed equal parts of it and place it in a condiment lid to try out tonight in my test.
First results showed the ants completely ignoring the bait. The reason is simple:
This is the strongest mixture of borax, and the ants could easily detect it and stay away. Ants may be a nuisance but they are smart.
It turned out, in all of my tests, that the weaker concentrations of Borax worked better than strong ones.

How Do You Get Rid Of Ants Using Icing Sugar

Borax Substitute For Killing Ants
As a natural substitute for borax, you can use several alternatives
Diatomaceous Earth
Diatomaceous earth is another all-natural substance that can kill ants. DE does work differently than borax.
To kill ants with DE they need to come in contact with the DE. The DE will slowly break down their exoskeleton and cause them to die.
Unfortunately, DE is effective at keeping ants out but not as effective at eliminating entire infestations due to the limited effects of secondary kills.
Baking Soda
Another alternative that is commonly used is baking soda. Baking soda can kill ants but its not as effective as other methods.
Baking soda is a much slower kill than borax and ants tend to avoid it if they can detect it. It also has a low secondary kill transfer.
Professional Bait
The best alternative to borax is using professional gel bait. These are designed to attract ants and slowly kill ants to maximize secondary and tertiary kills.

How Long Do You Leave Ant Powder Down For
The answer to how long ant powder should be left down depends on the type of powder being used. Some ant powders need to be left down for two weeks or until the ants are no longer present, while others can be left down for up to three months.

Ants will come into your home to find food there. If they can find consistently find something to feed on, they will keep on coming back. If they cant, theyll leave of their own accord after only a few days. This means that the best way to get rid of ants is still to make your home inhospitable to them. Keep all floors perfectly clean, even in hard to reach crevices. Wash your bins and take them out regularly. Dont leave food in the sink. Dont let food sit out at night, put everything in air-tight containers.
The next thing to know about ants is thatthey find food by following the trail left by ants that walked somewhere beforethem.
