But there are several types of sugar, and they have different effects on your body.
The scientific name for table sugar is sucrose. Sucrose is a disaccharide, meaning its made of two simple sugars: glucose and fructose.
When you eat sucrose, the glucose goes directly into your bloodstream to be used for energy. Alternatively, it can be stored in your muscles or as fat.
Before fructose can be used as energy, most passes through your liver, where its turned into glucose and fat.
If you eat too much fructose, this process can lead to fatty deposits in your liver, unhealthy levels of blood fats called triglycerides, and excess uric acid, all of which are linked to an increased risk of diabetes.
The most common sources of fructose are:
Sucrose, which comes from sugar cane or sugar beet.
High-fructose corn syrup , which is a blend of fructose and glucose made from corn starch.
Sucrose, fructose, and glucose also occur naturally in fruits and vegetables but usually in relatively smaller amounts, and fruits and vegetables generally are good sources of other beneficial substances, such as fiber and minerals.
Many processed foods like soft drinks and desserts contain added sugars in larger, more concentrated amounts.
The sugars in natural syrups like honey and agave are also free sugars.

Studies show that fructose doesnt have the same kind of effect on satiety as glucose.
In one study, people drank either a fructose-sweetened drink or a glucose-sweetened drink.
Afterwards, the fructose drinkers had much less activity in the satiety centres of the brain and felt hungrier .
There is also a study where fructose didnt lower the hunger hormone ghrelin nearly as much as glucose did .
Over time, because the calories from sugar arent as fulfilling, this can translate into an increased calorie intake.

That sounds like a simple enough question, right? First, eating sugar does not cause diabetes. That can be confusing because diabetes is too much sugar in our blood. When the body can’t use glucose for fuel, it starts to use fat. When this happens, chemicals called ketones are released into the blood. Some of these ketones, like extra glucose, pass out of the body through the urine.
High levels of ketones in the blood can be a problem because they cause the blood to become acidic. Too much acid in the blood throws off the body’s chemical balance and causes the symptoms listed below. In people with diabetes, this problem is called diabetic , or DKA. The government recommends that free sugars sugars added to food or drinks, and sugars found naturally in honey, syrups, and unsweetened fruit and vegetable juices, smoothies and purées should not make up more than 5% of the energy you get from food and drink each day.
- Adults should have no more than 30g of free sugars a day, .
- Children aged 7 to 10 should have no more than 24g of free sugars a day .
- Children aged 4 to 6 should have no more than 19g of free sugars a day .
