The dairy giant has expanded its portfolio during the past few years to include offerings that cater to hot trends in the food space such as probiotics and protein.

Chobani is rolling out a Greek yogurt without sugar as the food maker doubles down on healthier offerings in demand with consumers who are more closely watching what they eat and drink.

The company said Chobani Zero Sugar, shipping to retailers this month, is the first nationally distributed product in the U.S. yogurt aisle that has no trace of sugar. Each serving has 60 calories, uses only natural ingredients, is lactose-free and contains six live and active cultures including probiotics.

“This was a gap in our portfolio. It’s a segment we weren’t competing in directly,” Niel Sandfort, chief innovation officer at Chobani, said of the more than $1 billion diet and reduced sugar yogurt category. “We have very high hopes that it’s going to not just take share, not just premiumize and trade up the consumer, but bring in new consumers who may have walked away from the yogurt set because of sugar.”

Sandfort said Chobani’s no-sugar offering was a “very challenging product” to develop and was subjected to the most amount of testing in the company’s history for a new launch. Unlike other low-calorie, low-sugar options that use artificial ingredients and create an off-putting flavor, Sandfort said Chobani stuck to its mantra by using only natural ingredients.

How To Store Low Carb Frozen Yogurt

It shouldnt be a problem, but this low carb frozen yogurt is best eaten within two weeks. The flavor will keep longer, but homemade ice creams and frozen yogurts tend to have ice crystals form which will change the texture.

The label on this brand reads that there is “40% less sugar than similar yogurts.” The website even clarifies the statement. Chobani’s yogurt contains about 9 grams of sugar per serving of 5.3 ounces. Meanwhile, they claim similar yogurts without sugar substitutes average about 16 grams of sugar for the same amount of ounces. This particular yogurt also contains 12 grams of protein.

Overall, I thought the flavor was subtle but helped emphasize the yogurt. For this tasting, I picked up their “Madagascar Vanilla and Cinnamon” flavor. When you opened the lid, you could actually see cinnamon at the top. This was appreciated because I didn’t taste as if I was eating less sugar.

With that being said, Chobani makes it only to the number 3 slot because I thought the yogurt was too dense. For some people, that can indicate a hearty yogurt. However, the texture felt a little too thick for me. I took off the lid to see the yogurt stuck to the edges of the container. The thickness of the yogurt led to an almost dry chew in my mouth, which isn’t enjoyable when trying to eat healthy food.

Have you ever tried to find a sugar free Greek yogurt? Chances are you didnt have any luck. All yogurt made from animal milk naturally has sugar known as lactose.

While technically sugar free Greek yogurt brands do not exist because of the lactose, there are Greek yogurt options that only contain natural sugar from the milk and no added sugar.

If you are ever in a store and are wondering if a Greek yogurt product has added sugar, simply look at the ingredients on the label. A product without added sugar will not have sugar listed as an ingredient as shown in the top photo below . You will notice the only ingredient is milk. We first completed this list a couple of years ago and at that time most no sugar added yogurt was plain yogurt. Go ahead and say boring, we agree. We were able to find products containing plain Greek yogurt with honey and no added sugar. An example would be Fage Total with honey. We did not include the honey products on the list below because while they did not technically have added sugar, the honey tended to dramatically increase the sugar content.

How To Keep Your Yogurt Low


Once you’ve found a low-carb yogurt you love, make sure your toppings don’t sabotage your low-sugar goals.

Make your yogurt more satiating with add-ins like chia seeds or ground flax, which add fiber to fill you up, suggests Cording. If you need a little sweetness, add a teeny drizzle of maple syrup or honey.

Looking For The Healthiest Yogurt For Your Kidsyoure Not Alone

I get a lot of newsletters into my inbox everyday research, recipes, all sorts. Anyway this came in this morning Yogurt – from Harvard School of Public Health. So I thought Id have a read and it opened my eyes to lots of things I didnt know such as:

  • Some calcium is removed from Greek yogurt during the straining process. Commercial Greek yogurts may add back calcium in, but some do not. If you are including Greek yogurt in your diet as a calcium source, be sure to check the Nutrition Facts label.

  • Some yogurts can contain up to 20-25 grams of sugar per 5 oz. container. This may come from naturally occurring lactose, but most will be from added sweeteners. If you see sugar or other forms of sugar among the top four ingredients in the Ingredients list, consider choosing a low sugar yogurt or use plain yogurt with your own addition of fresh fruit or a drizzle of honey.

  • 1 teaspoon of sugar is 4g, but remember there will be a bit of sugar from the fruit, how much we dont know!
